The Storyteller's Chair

About this artwork

An oversized bronze throne-like chair carved with imagery from Ojibwe creation narratives — the Great Turtle, Manidoog spirits, and rice harvest scenes. Visitors are explicitly invited to sit in the chair, becoming part of the ongoing narrative of place and identity.

The Story

Created in a two-year collaboration with the Rochester Public Library and the White Earth Cultural Center, this piece accompanies monthly outdoor storytelling events that have drawn up to 300 community members. Lightfeather designed the chair to be intentionally welcoming in scale — large enough to feel magical, not intimidating.

About the Artist

Ojibwe artist from White Earth Nation. Lightfeather's work preserves and shares indigenous oral storytelling traditions through monumental public sculpture. Her pieces have received awards from the Bush Foundation and First Peoples Worldwide.
