About this artwork
An 18-foot steel harp whose seven stainless-steel strings are tuned to produce natural harmonics in Minnesota winds. Located at the crest of Quarry Hill, the instrument creates a shifting, otherworldly soundtrack for park visitors. No electricity required — the wind does all the work.
The Story
Lund spent two seasons studying wind patterns at Quarry Hill before selecting the precise hilltop position and tuning the strings to the site's dominant wind frequencies. The piece was funded jointly by the Rochester Park Foundation and a Minnesota State Arts Board grant. It was the most-discussed new artwork in Rochester in 2024.
About the Artist
Scandinavian-American sound artist creating large-scale aeolian (wind-powered) musical structures. Lund's installations have been commissioned in Norway, Denmark, and across the US Midwest.
